About No Home
Established in 2009, No Home is a charity awareness campaign organized by a group of SFU students in collaboration with the Covenant House of Vancouver with the intent of raising awareness about youth homelessness in Vancouver.
In British Columbia alone, over 17,000 runaway youths are reported annually, and around 1000 homeless youth can be found on the street on any given night. Whether the youths have experienced physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse, the result is that they find themselves in an even worse situation; they end up on the streets where they are more vulnerable to sexual exploitation, drug abuse, poverty, and illness.
The No Home initiative is to raise awareness about the issue and to inspire other youths to get involved in helping the homeless. The main event of the campaign will start at 9:00am on March 12, where participating youths will sleep on the streets for 24 hours with only a blanket and a pillow. No electronics or other comforts of home are allowed. All funds raised will go towards the Covenant House of Vancouver.
About Covenant House
Covenant House Vancouver exists for those young people for whom there is often no one else – young people who either have willingly fled physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse or those who have been forced from their homes.
Often broken-hearted, the young people who come to Covenant House face many barriers to independent, healthy living. Many life threatening situations await kids who end up on the street. Substance misuse, disease and violence are a daily reality of street life.
Covenant House welcomes young people aged 16 – 24 with open arms. We bandage their cut-up feet, we give them hot food and a warm bed and we support them in their choice to change their present circumstances while helping them heal from past traumas.
