About SMA

The Student Marketing Association (SMA) is SFU’s creative and innovative marketing-based student club. Students from all faculties join together in this organization to gain skills in marketing, event coordination, and leadership, planning numerous social and professional events throughout the year.

SMA has been in existence for over 20 years, and is an award-winning collegiate chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA), the world’s largest society of marketing professionals. Throughout the year, SMA actively brings to campus a variety of different events, ranging from marketing competitions, professional speaker engagements, agency tours, to social events and charity fundraisers. Events and activities put on by SMA reflect the interests of SFU students, and provide a valuable experience for all attendees.

We are proud to look back upon a year of incredible growth, renewed vision, and numerous accomplishments. We have reached new heights from the first milestones achieved by SMA in within the recent years. Several milestones that SMA has achieved was co-hosting one of the biggest networking events in 2005 at SFU called Marketers’ Night and hosting SFU’s first Brand Wars (now called Inter-collegiate Marketing Competition) in year 2006. Now, within the last two years, we have been able to consistently align our association with our vision and climb further than ever before towards our goal. SMA further enhances the opportunities for students to gain real-world experience by initiating a program which brings big and small companies alike and student teams together to work on the development and execution of marketing strategies and campaigns. Meanwhile, the Intercollegiate Marketing Competition has been increasingly recognized at the international level. Finally, No Home, a charity campaign established and run by SMA for the Covenant House in 2009 has garnered more attention from the media (TV, radio, and newspaper) and the local community than ever before. The committee raised a staggering amount of $8519.18 in April of 2011- a record breaking amount since the conception of the event.

Our vision is to be ambassadors for the marketing industry on campus at SFU – to complement the marketing knowledge that SFU students gain in the classroom with real-world marketing experience. Our goal is to provide students with the ultimate university experience – gaining valuable skills and knowledge while having fun and meeting great people! We are proud to say that we have been consistent with realizing our vision and with reaching our goal.
